Anything Goes Update

Playing around with some new ideas for Anything Goes Apparel, I found myself influenced by Canadian stereotypes for this latest tattooed pin up girl. I designed this as a 4 colour print using the background as a 5th colour and then added a wood grain texture on top as I thought it would fit with the Canadian/woodchuck theme.

The Blue Pet - Children's Book

For this part of 'The Blue Pet' project we were given 5 lines from the original text to work from and create 4 single page and 1 double page spread in sequence, to be aimed at 3-8 year olds.

Here is my final artwork.

Baby Board Books - Final Images

These are my five final images for one of my current projects focused upon 'Baby Board Books', Based on a piece of text entitled 'The Blue Pet' and to be designed to be aimed at a very young audience.

I used a watercolour wash for the background and to dull the strong white paper and then painted the characters with a small set of gouache.

I'm A Lumberjack And I'm Okay...

Had some fun with this idea  for Anything Goes Apparel inspired by the classic Monty Python song.

Rough copy sketched using POSCA pens and final version drawn as a line drawing, scanned and then finalised in Photoshop. I designed the piece as a two colour screen print. To give the image more depth I used halftone effects on parts of both layers which add tone and contrast to the final image.

'Social Conflict' Final Piece

Here is my final piece for the 'Social Conflict' project. I am happy with my use of gouache as it has greatly improved since my last attempt with it. The finish looks crude and could be improved with better use of key lines, not using fineliners to outline parts of the image and the background characters need to be more muted to make the characters in the foreground stand out. I think the mermaids face needs to be developed further as there are some odd elements to her features that need to be worked out. Also, the jumper on the fisherman would look better as a different shade of blue to give more depth to the image as having it the same colour as the background flattens the image quite a lot.

Baby Board Books Project - Development & Layouts

For one of my current projects I was asked to research 'Baby Board Books' and develop 5 sequential images from a piece of text entitled 'The Blue Pet'. To be designed to be aimed at a very young audience.

Here are some shots of my development work and layout drawings.

It's been a while...

I'm really bad at updating things like this. I spend so much time updating the various Anything Goes pages I think about this blog and have one of those 'I'll do it later' moments.

Here's a collection of the work I've produced throughout my summer project. I usually find it hard to work in other artists styles so I was pretty happy when I got into the swing of Gary Baseman and Liz Clements styles. I tried to add my own twist with the additional shadow on the characters and the odd little tattoo. Mostly watercolour, gouache, uni pin fineliners and a bit of dip pen and ink.
